

Any of these makes for a fascinating insight into the still classified world of the Dragon Lady. Chris also wrote an excellent article for the Spring 1997 volume (#28) of the World Air Power Journal. Not surprisingly, Aerofax's Minigraph #28 on the U-2RfTR-1 is also a detailed work, having been co-written by Chris and Jay. Jay Miller's Skunk Works: The Official History has extensive coverage of the U-2. Fortunately, Chris is in the process of updating this excellent work, which is a "must read" for anybody interested in the U-2. History of the U-2 Spyplane remains the most far-ranging work on the subject. The third run was 12 years after the second, although this time the aircraft were for all intents identical to the second batch. Variant, occurred ten years after the original. "Kelly" Johnson was already an established aircraft designer, and what is now known as Skunk Works had conceived and built the XP-80 Shooting Star and XF-104 Starfighter prototypes, it was the CIA's decision to let Lockheed design and build the U-2 that cemented Skunk Works'reputation.
